The Midland didn't give in lightly to this tentacle of the GNR deep into their territory, and built a branch from Stanton Gate to Ilkeston where it could pick up traffic from the collieries after the shortest transit over GNR metals ! To further surround and contain the intruding GNR line, the MR also sported a branch-off-a branch to Mapperley collieries, in sight of the windows of Shipley Hall.   (10/16)
